Reflection
As I spent a lot of time with high school students that are pursuing similar interests as I did in high school, I was able to put myself in their shoes. I understood how important it can be for young students like that to receive personalized instruction so I made an effort to connect with each student. By doing this, I developed my leadership skills in learning how to lead small groups and lead them well. Leaders have an unusual opportunity to inspire and promote growth and change. In my opinion, admirable leaders are those that can effectively motivate an individual for the sake of strengthening the individual. Good leaders will understand that in order to guide individuals they must understand the individual. Different people respond to different types of motivation in various ways. By understanding those with whom they work, a leader is able to know how to motivate and strengthen them as individuals, in turn strengthening the unit as a whole. In order to understand other people, a leader must be able to consider their perspective through actively communicating with them. Once a leader has reached an understanding of each member of his or her team and how they respond to different types of motivation and teaching, they can more effectively unify and motivate the group. A good leader understands that the success of those they lead is in fact their success. When a leader understands this, then they should unselfishly work to enable the success of others. A teacher, for example, has the responsibility to educate a younger generation of future leaders. Teachers aren’t given the most substantial compensation, but when they truly work for the benefit of their students, the students are given an opportunity to succeed. The students then have an opportunity to create more change and growth within their circles of influence. The success of a teacher is not in how many students they can get to memorize the quadratic formula, for example, but for how many students they can create opportunity for future success through giving them an education.
